How Storage Impacts Your Business.

In our webinar last month, we discussed what to consider when purchasing new computers for your business. Part of what you should take into consideration is how much storage you need for your computers. It can be difficult to know how much you expect for your business devices. You can either underestimate your expected needs and go through the headache of productivity disruption and needing to purchase more storage; or you can get too much and waste money. Your storage needs will vary depending on how you use your devices.
There are two major types of storage:
Internal storage is built into your devices and are usually faster.
External storage includes USB drives and SD cards, and can be added or removed, though they tend to function a bit slower.
Additionally, different devices automatically come with different storage capabilities. Here are some common options:
- Tablets: usually range from 32GB to 256GB with slots for memory cards if you need more space.
- Laptops: usually range from 128GB to 1TB of storage that generally allows you to upgrade later.
- Desktop computers: usually allow for a lot more storage, ranging from 1TB to 4TB; you can also add more storage if needed.
Though figuring out what type of device best suits your business needs, there are ways you can manage your storage even better to avoid running out of space. Using cloud storage like Google Drive or iCloud saves and storages your files online and is often used as primary storage for many businesses. Also, making sure you delete unused apps or programs can free up space and allow your devices to run faster. Regularly clearing your cache will remove temporary files. And using streaming services rather than downloads can save a lot of space.
However, if you do find yourself running out of space, using SD cards or an external drive is a great option before purchasing new devices. But sometimes, you can’t avoid the need for upgrading your business equipment. Be sure to choose a device that will have enough storage for your needs, remembering that it is better to have too much than too little.
