Good Encryption Protects More Than Just Your Data, It Protects Your Business.

Good Encryption Protects More Than Just Your Data, It Protects Your Business.

You’ve likely heard lots of talk about encryption and the importance of using it to protect your business data. But what exactly is encryption? Simply put, it is a method that changes regular data text into an unreadable code (also called ciphertext) that can only be de-coded back to readable text (also called plaintext) using the right key. You could liken it to an encrypted message looking like a foreign language and the key to be your translator. It is an incredible weapon in safeguarding your data from hackers. So how exactly does it work? Encryption uses algorithms (a set of rules for solving problems) and keys (a password that unlocks a secret message) to code and decode data.

Just as an example, an encrypted message would look something like this if anyone other than the intended recipient/keyholder were to gain unauthorized access:
“Wkwv lv vlpsohb d whvw. Fdoo Whfk Hdqohv iru uhdo surwhfwlrq wrgdb!”

But with the proper key, the message will read as:
“This is simply a test. Call Tech Eagles for real protection today!”

Though you might not be very familiar with encryption methods, you’ve almost certainly been engaging in technology that uses encryption more than you realize. Encryption is used when you purchase items online to protect your credit card information from hackers, on messaging apps (like WhatsApp) to keep your messages private, and by many email services to protect emails from being read by others.

Encryption offers many wonderful security benefits, but it also causes some challenges. While the use of keys is a robust protective tool, if a person loses their key, they may also lose their data. Additionally, since it needs processing power for the coding and de-coding, it could slow down some of your other systems. Despite those setbacks, it remains a powerful and highly recommended tool for your business security.

Once you begin using encryption as a regular business practice, keep some of these tips in mind:

  1. Always use strong passwords for all your business devices and accounts.
  1. Keep your software up to date to protect against any vulnerabilities in your systems.
  1. Avoid using public Wi-Fi. If you must, use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to encrypt your internet connection.
