6 Helpful Tips to Troubleshoot Common Business Network Issues

In today’s digital age, the lifeline for every business is their network. With a smooth network that functions as it should, your business can enjoy the conveniences of email, cloud services, and a host of applications to boost your functionality, productivity, and revenue stream. On the flip side of that coin, though, is that when a network is severed, it brings your business to a grinding halt.

Despite the realities of experiencing a dysfunctional network, there are some things you can do yourself to troubleshoot the problem. If you act quickly, you just may be able to save your business countless time, money, and frustration.

Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind if you experience a network outage:

  1. Try to identify the source and scope of the problem as fast as possible. Begin by asking questions. Is this affecting a single user or your whole network? When did the issue start? What was going on when it began? What solutions have been attempted to fix it? Were there any error messages or alerts that appeared? Document your findings to help you troubleshoot if the same problem occurs later.
  2. Inspect all your physical connections, cables, ports, power sources, and network devices, Make sure that everything is securely connected to their power and routing sources. Double check that nothing is damaged. Try testing cables with other devices to make sure they are working properly. Reset/reboot devices if needed.
  3. Test your network connectivity easily with command tools like Traceroute and Ping. If you are still unable to find the source of the problem, check your different devices, including your Wi-Fi signal. Weak Wi-Fi connections can be the source of connectivity issues.
  4. Look into your network configurations. Check your DNS and IP settings, then check your configurations on your switches and routers, if you’re able. If you’re not sure what to do at this stage, you can check with your IT team, or call us for help
  5. Check your network performance using monitoring tools. These can provide very helpful information not only with problem areas, but also with your bandwidth usage and network traffic. Be sure check that you don’t have any heavy usage or high traffic that could be slowing your network down; if you do, you might want to consider upgrading to a higher bandwidth. Also be sure to rule out any possible interferences from other electronic devices that might interfere with Wi-Fi signals (such as a microwave!).
  6. Make sure that you are not behind on your security updates. Be sure that your software and firmware are updated to reduce the risk of any bugs and to improve performance. Consider running a malware scan on all the devices in the office.
